Boyschoir collegium iuvenum Stuttgart

Founded in 1989, the collegium iuvenum Stuttgart Boys’ Choir has a unique mission that goes beyond music. While choral music is at the heart of our work, we also see ourselves as a platform for extracurricular youth education and a social and cultural mission. Our goal is to honor and preserve the centuries-old tradition of boys’ choirs and to bring the rich culture of sacred choral music into the 21st century.

We approach choral music as a collective experience, aiming to engage the boys intellectually and emotionally with the pieces they perform. Religious themes are explored in ways that resonate with the boys’ lives, encouraging them to connect deeply with the subjects they sing about, such as joy, sorrow, life, and death. Rehearsals are not just about mastering the music, but also about understanding the meaning behind it.

The choir operates as a choir school, but it is not a boarding school. We offer a structured development program starting from preschool, with boys beginning their musical education at the age of five. The boys progress through various levels, starting with the A- and A+ Choir (ages 6–7), B Choir (8), C Choir (from age 9), the Travel Choir (ages 9–10), and finally the Concert Choir (ages 10–12). To reach the Concert Choir, boys must either pass through all previous stages or demonstrate their abilities through solo performances or similar ensemble experience. After their voice breaks, many return to sing in the Men’s Choir, remaining active until about the age of 25.

Collegium iuvenum Stuttgart is ecumenical, institutionally independent, and non-denominational.

Our work is supported by the collegium iuvenum Stuttgart e.V., a non-profit organization recognized for its commitment to youth welfare and extracurricular education. The over 700 members contribute to the funding of vocal training, concerts, travel, rehearsals, and administrative costs. The choir is also supported by the City of Stuttgart and the state of Baden-Württemberg. The dedication of former and current choir members, parents, and friends has allowed the choir to reach a high level of musical and artistic excellence, recognized across Europe.
